What is GST?
GST (Goods and Services Tax) is India's unified indirect tax system introduced in July 2017. It replaced dozens of central and state taxes with a single tax framework. GST applies to the supply of goods and services across India.
GST Rate Slabs (2025)
- 0% — Essential items: fresh vegetables, milk, unprocessed food, books
- 5% — Basic necessities: packaged food, medicines, economy class air travel
- 12% — Standard goods: processed food, smartphones, computers
- 18% — Most services, electronics, cameras (most common rate)
- 28% — Luxury goods: cars, tobacco, air conditioners
CGST, SGST, and IGST
For intra-state transactions (seller and buyer in same state), GST splits equally into CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST). For inter-state transactions, IGST (Integrated GST) applies at the full rate.
Adding vs Removing GST
If you have the base price and want the GST-inclusive price: Total = Base × (1 + Rate/100). If you have the inclusive price and want the base: Base = Inclusive / (1 + Rate/100).
